Srinagar, Dec 31 (KNO): In 2025, the Government Medical College Anantnag registered over 700 new Cancer cases taking the total to 3500.
Principal GMC Anantnag Prof. Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb while talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that there is a growing burden of Cancer in the region and GMC Anantnag’s expanding role in providing comprehensive oncology services.
She informed that 730 new Cancer patients have been registered during the current year, while the total number of registrations having crossed 3,500 mark.
She added that the department is conducting thousands of chemotherapy administrations and palliative care procedures annually, reflecting the increasing demand for Cancer care services in the region.
She inaugurated the advanced day care chemotherapy facility at the institute. The newly inaugurated day care Chemotherapy Ward is expected to greatly enhance patient convenience by enabling timely chemotherapy delivery, reducing hospital stay, and minimizing the need for referrals to tertiary centers outside the district. The facility has been developed with a focus on patient safety, comfort, and efficient service delivery.
‘COLLECTIVE EFFORTS NEEDED TO WORK TOWARDS CANCER FREE SOCIETY
Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology Dr Shahid Bashir told KNO that the new ward would significantly strengthen the department’s treatment capacity and improve overall patient care.
He put emphasis on collective efforts needed to raise awareness and work towards a Cancer free society.
He said that significant advancements in Cancer treatment have emerged in recent years due to which survival rates have increased.
He said that even survival chances of patients in the advanced stage of cancer due to advanced technologies have increased that wasn't possible a few years before.
Other doctors said that early detection of Cancer is crucial for its successful treatment. "With advanced techniques, Cancer can be detected at an early stage, when it is more treatable and when the chances of survival are much higher," they added.
They said that currently at least 50 percent Cancers are treatable and some even in advanced stages but early diagnosis, prevention, and effective treatment are all integral components in combating Cancer.
They said that the early detection and treatment are must as if treatment is delayed, the chances of survival are less while early-stage patients have more chance of being cured.
They said that lifestyle adjustments were also critical in Cancer prevention as 70 percent of cancers stem from lifestyle choices that can be altered, including diet quality and physical activity—(KNO)
